Hemp, from sowing to harvesting and beyond. Some say that industrial hemp has over 50,000 known uses (and counting): paper, textiles, building material, biofuel, biodegradable plastics, food, oil, animal feed, paint are only a few of them. On top of that, it is one of the fastest growing plants that doesn't require a lot of care and maintenance, meaning it's a renewable resource.

Bucșoaia Camp used to be one of the largest school camps in Romania. The Romanian Revolution in December '89 brought change and slowly the interest for such camps diminished. People would now rather take their kids with them on holidays. In the mid 2000s it was abandoned completely. The camp was built in 1936 and was used by scouts until the 2nd World War, when it was converted into a military camp. Then the communists took over and the place was repurposed as a school camp, probably one of the largest in Romania. Due to a gradual but steady decline of interest in places like these (school camps were abandoned in favor of individual family holidays), the camp closed in 2005 and the ownership was transferred to the Frasin City Hall. Lacking funds and with no external support, the city left the camp as it was, without even the most basic security in place. Thus, the buildings and camp facilities were vandalized and still remain unattended to this day. Old messages can be seen written on walls and furniture, as an interesting testament to what once happened here. On 18 September 2017, a Mil Mi-8T helicopter of the Ministry of Internal Affairs buzzed around Suceava for hours. The Mi-8 is one of the most popular helicopters in the world. A true workhorse that stood the test of time, first designed in the 60's, is still in production today, being continuously enhanced. The T version has two turboshafts, a cruise speed of 230 km/h (141 mph), a range of 610 km (378 miles) and can lift almost 6 tons. Its maximum takeoff weight is 13 tons, the machine alone weighing 7.3 tons. As I found out from the press, the mission was in fact a prequel for a hospital fire rescue exercise, scheduled a week later. The news comes a couple of weeks after another involving Mi-8's. Nine of these helicopters are going to enter IGSU (General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations) service as Search & Rescue platforms, with one being designated to Suceava. |
