On 18 September 2017, a Mil Mi-8T helicopter of the Ministry of Internal Affairs buzzed around Suceava for hours. The Mi-8 is one of the most popular helicopters in the world. A true workhorse that stood the test of time, first designed in the 60's, is still in production today, being continuously enhanced. The T version has two turboshafts, a cruise speed of 230 km/h (141 mph), a range of 610 km (378 miles) and can lift almost 6 tons. Its maximum takeoff weight is 13 tons, the machine alone weighing 7.3 tons. As I found out from the press, the mission was in fact a prequel for a hospital fire rescue exercise, scheduled a week later. The news comes a couple of weeks after another involving Mi-8's. Nine of these helicopters are going to enter IGSU (General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations) service as Search & Rescue platforms, with one being designated to Suceava.
